 The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback set a simple goal for himself before this season: Play all 16 games of a season for just the second time in his career and first time since 2006. ASHBURN, Va. – They don’t have a relationship, yet they remain linked – because of their style of play; because of their inconsistencies.
 
 When the Washington Redskins play the San Francisco 49ers Monday night,http://www.carvelpod.com/news/5.asp, the quarterbacks, who say they don’t know one another, will command attention. The question is: Which quarterbacks will we see? The dynamic elements of Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick? Or the passing-game struggles of both?

And both have some good reasons: Griffin missed the offseason because of knee surgery, setting his development back; Kaepernick lost his best receiver, Michael Crabtree, to injury.
 
 “We don’t feel Colin Kaepernick is struggling. I think he’s playing very good football. And watching RGIII on tape, I feel the same way about him,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “They’ve been a very productive offense. They put points on the board. They move the football and score points against everybody that they play. I guess I don’t agree with the premise of the question.”
 
 Both, however, remain works in progress if nothing else. Both remain capable of games that produce one highlight after another. Both remain capable of head-scratching days as well. Last week, for example, Griffin completed 17 of 35 passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns and a bad decision that resulted in a game-ending interception.
 
 Griffin has had three games where he’s completed 50 percent or less of his passes. He’s on pace for 22 touchdown passes, only two more than he threw in 15 games as a rookie. This,http://www.floordaily.net/subscribe/10.html, despite throwing a lot more this season: Griffin has attempted only 21 fewer passes than he made last season. The extra passes have resulted in more bad plays: Griffin has thrown 10 interceptions, five more than 2012.
 
 “Robert has done a lot of good things this year, too,” Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. “We’re turning the ball over a lot more, but he has definitely been asked to do a lot more – he’s had to do a lot more. He’s seen a lot more different looks than he saw last year, and I think that’s part of the process.”
 
 Griffin still is learning how to read coverages faster and throw with more trust and anticipation. He’s done that at times – he made three excellent throws using those qualities versus Minnesota, for example. But at times if he’s slower to go through his progressions,http://www.floordaily.net/subscribe/9.asp, it forces him to throw with less-than-ideal mechanics. Other times his protection does not afford him much time – or results in him throwing with hands in his face. On a missed throw to Santana Moss in the fourth quarter Sunday, for example, a defender had a hand in his face forcing an adjusted throw.
 
 He also took a sack/fumble at the 5-yard line because he held the ball too long, rather than throwing to tight end Jordan Reed in a one-on-one matchup at the goal line.
 
 And Griffin also sometimes hesitates on throws, allowing windows to close. It’s all part of what coach Mike Shanahan calls his growing pains.

However, the Redskins coaches – and many others -- say part of the problem has been his receiving corps, which is still missing Crabtree.
 
 But keep in mind: Three of Kaepernick’s four worst games occurred against defenses currently ranked in the top four in total yards and top five in passing yards allowed. The Redskins rank 28th in total yards and 32nd against the pass. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Had he been in a joking mood, New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks might have explained his own disappointing performance in Sunday's 31-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs by pointing out that Eli Manning can't catch the passes himself. After being targeted only once last week, Nicks dropped a couple of catchable balls this week and took ownership of his own role in the loss that dropped the Giants to 0-4 for the season.
 
 "Definitely, on my end, I felt like I could have come down with two or three that I didn't come down with," Nicks said. "That's on me, and I know I have to play better. As an offense, I know we can play better. It wasn't that long ago we were all out there making big plays. I still believe we will bounce back."

The Giants' skill-position players on offense are very talented. The line is awful right now, but offensive lines have a way of improving as the season goes along. And next week's opponent is the Philadelphia Eagles, whose defense is far more vulnerable than those against which the Giants have played their first four games. Nicks and the Giants are justified in thinking things will get better for the offense, if for no other reason than they can't get worse.
 
 Where Nicks is wrong, though, is in his expectation of what "bounce back" means. Inside the Giants' locker room, as there should be, remains hope that something can still be made of this season. They are professionals, still getting paid, and they will continue to work and believe until the math tells them to stop.
 
 But the long view says it's over, before October has even hit. Only one team ever has made the playoffs after an 0-4 start. The Giants right now have so many problems at so many positions that it's impossible to imagine them replicating the 1992 Chargers' 11-1 finish. And even if the NFC East persists in its top-end mediocrity of the past three seasons and can be won with eight or nine wins, and even if the Giants could go 8-4 the rest of the way and pull off something like that, it only would obscure their larger problems. This is a team in need of major work. And with this season lost, it's time for the Giants to start thinking about 2014 and beyond.
 
 So, yeah, Nicks might "bounce back" and post big numbers the rest of the way. He's a talented-enough player to do it, and if he did, it wouldn't be a surprise. But the Giants are going to be watching very closely to see whether he can, or whether the leg injuries of the past few seasons have diminished him as a player. The Giants are going to have a decision to make on Nicks, who's a pending free agent. The final 12 games of this season are a chance for him to show he's healthy enough to deserve the big-money deal he wants.
 
 And he's not the only one. The Giants are going to have offseason decisions to make on decorated veterans such as Justin Tuck, Chris Snee, Corey Webster and Antrel Rolle. And while some of those decisions seem obvious from here, it's not crazy to think they could be affected one way or the other by what those players show in terms of health and productivity over the final 12 games of this season.
 
 They have a decision looming not long from now on Jason Pierre-Paul, who has one sack in his past 11 games. The Giants still believe Pierre-Paul is a special-enough talent to be a foundation piece for their defense. But if he continues to languish through the final three-quarters of this season the way he has since the midpoint of last season, they may find themselves re-evaluating that assessment.

 Manning is 32 years old, so there's plenty of window left for him. Heck, his brother is 37 and making a mockery of the league. The questions are about what kind of team the Giants can put around him, and how quickly they can retool at the most important spots. The issues on the offensive and defensive lines are the result of a failure to develop replacements for aging veterans, and now general manager Jerry Reese and the front office have two things to do: figure out which current members of the team look like important parts of its future, and then go out and find replacements for the ones who don't. That's a bitter realization for a team on Sept. 29, but that's where the Giants are, and that's what they have to do.

When you're compared on draft day to one of the greatest football players of all time, you have a lot to live up to. That's what happened to DeMarcus Ware when Bill Parcells drafted him for the Dallas Cowboys in 2005. I think the reason we don't hear much about Parcells' comparison is that Ware has been so great. Had Ware flopped, it'd be something you'd hear all the time -- "Remember when Parcells said this guy could be like Lawrence Taylor? Har-de-har-har." Something like that.
 
 Instead, Ware has become one of the elite defensive players in the NFL. And Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who was on the Giants' coaching staff under Parcells during Taylor's career,http://www.floordaily.net/subscribe/8.asp, said on a conference call with Cowboys writers that the comparison may be a good one:
 "I mean, he's the best player we've faced this year. He does all of the things you want him to do. He's strong against the run. He can rush the passer. He's great in pursuit. He's got power. He's got speed. He's got good technique. He's good in pass coverage. He gets a lot of depth. I mean,Giants get big play from Hixon, he's an asset to your pass coverage, if you want to drop him. I'd say all those same things about Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence had a tremendous career. Ware has had a great --what is it? -- six years or whatever it's been. He's been great in that time and looks like he’s still going strong."
 It's tough to imagine higher praise for a defensive player, especially from someone who saw Taylor's brilliant career up-close, as Belichick did. But Todd Archer offers this:
 In his first 100 games,http://www.floordaily.net/subscribe/7.html, Ware has 85 sacks,http://www.nfl-nhl-mlb.cc/12.html, 25 forced fumbles, three touchdowns and one interception.
 
 In Taylor's first 101 games, he had 84 sacks (including 9.5 as a rookie in 1981 before sacks were an official stat), 16 forced fumbles, eight interceptions and one touchdown.
 So, maybe it's not crazy at all. Taylor is credited of course with revolutionizing the position of linebacker,http://www.carvelpod.com/news/5.asp, and in some cases with revolutionizing other positions as well. And his contribution to Super Bowl champion teams certainly elevates him above Ware at this point,http://www.carvelpod.com/news/3.asp, as does his longevity. But if Ware's career continues on its current path and he ever does find his way to a Super Bowl, this may not be a silly debate when all is said and done.
