sus Apple, is still centered in California's Silicon Valley. But now a Chicago area company, Motorola Mobility, has been tapped for a major supporting role with its proposed sale Monday to Google for $12.5 billion in cash.

The deal, a well kept secret UGG Boots Clearance in an industry that loves a rumor as much as a shiny new gadget, would put Libertyville based Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and its smartphone business in the hands of Google Inc., whose Android operating system for mobile devices represents the biggest challenge to Apple Inc.

Unlike UGG Boots Clearance Sale Apple, Google hasn't participated directly in handset manufacturing, choosing to license Android software to partners such as HTC, Samsung and Motorola. It was spun off from Motorola Inc. in January. Motorola introduced the first commercial cellphone and dominated the industry last decade with the Razr, but then lost momentum. Today, Apple's products are market and buzz leaders, while Google is getting acclaim for the way it is adapting its knowledge of the Internet to mobile computing.

The $12.5 billion price tag represents a 63 percent premium over Motorola Mobility's closing share price on Friday and is the largest amount that Google has paid to acquire a company. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of 2011 or early 2012.

Google has not spelled out all its plans, but it indicated that it would let Motorola Mobility run as an independent company. It is unclear how Motorola Mobility's 3,300 employees in Libertyville would be affected. This uncertainty extends to Motorola Mobility's deal with the state of Ill
