a conservative changes to save what

As Giuseppe di Lampedusa put it so beautifully in The Leopard:Hey Nigel, give me one example of evolution, rampant or otherwise. But before trying, remember the North Face Jackets Outlet rules: change does not equal evolution (that called natural variation and is only the sorting or loss of existing information); evolution requires increasing complexity resulting from mutation and/or natural selection. The question is, can you give a single example of a mutation that has increased the information in any genome (you might check out Dawkin response to this question first). Over to youFor myself Seadrift, its not about who I like or dislike, but rather which party puts Australia first, which party is patriotic, which party looks after the wellbeing of ordinary Australians, and which party wants to keep our borders secure from invaders, both passive and aggressive.Looking at the main parties dispassionately you have to come to the conclusion that Labor has failed on all counts. The Coalition has its problems, it is not perfect, but it does have a good track record and to be brutally honest, given the world as it is at the moment, I rather Australia was in safe Conservative Right hands than in any other.Rosemary there is no doubt the Rudd government has had a dismal first term. Their one claim to success avoiding a recession has come at too high a price via the insulation and BER debacles. However, looking at the polls, you must agree that Abbott is yet to win the punters over. Why is that? My guess is that he has taken the party too far to the right. He was needed to dump the CPRS but if he wants to win office, he needs to move a bit closer to the middle. Don forget North Face Outlet 70% Off Rudd won office by acting like Howard lite; to the left of Howard but to the right of traditional Labor ie in the middle.Spencer, paid maternity leave is for those employed in the workforce, those who produce the wealth that this country enjoys. They are not welfare dependents who are a drain on that wealth and to our productivity. The maternity leave concept enables mothers to live in the modern world with North Face Outlet mortgages and lifetyle expenses (they earn them, let them enjoy them) while making a critical input into the first months of the lives of their children. This is good for society and is good for the economy and workforce, because valuable skills are not lost, and hopefully we will get better adjusted children in the future. And remember, that taxpayers won foot the bill (like they do to support welfare recipients). Employers pay for the scheme out of profits over $5M(not turnover) it is paid for as a result of productivity and wealth generation already achieved by highly profitable companies. It is proper that employers support their workers they are their most valuable asset.Who do you think supports the current system of day care subsidies for parents who are forced to go back to work? The taxpayer! Abbott scheme will ease the burden on yours and my taxes while giving very young children the chance to get some loving care from their biological parents, instead of strangers. The argument between progress and tradition is centuries old. People resistant to change argue tradition(we have always done it this way, and, if it ain broke.), but tradition has it good and bad.Traditions that uphold standards of human values we should all live by, should never be compromised.Traditions that are clearly outdated and try to hold back progress and growth should be scrapped. That is a conservative plank I live by.Case in point would be our Republic. We will not go to the next level as a Nation until we become a republic. The Oz cringe is alive and North Face Womens Jackets well. Currently the politicians are our masters and run everything to suit themselves, this has to change for this Nation to grow. We must redress the balance back to where it should be, with the people. If we are afforded a real debate, a republican vehicle could do that.Neville, I would have a look at the American model of a republic and the trouble they are having with the and our masters relationship if I were you. It doesn seem to change much and I prefer our westminster system over this republic BS anyway. At least you don have unelected jurists interpreting the law and/or constitution every five minutes to influence the outcome of everyday legal issues. Our system works most of the time, and apart from the USA most republics around the place are a bloody shambles. So me old son, be careful what you wish for.Neville, our system is one of the best in a corrupt world. It doesn set up opportunities for egomanics to buy themselves into power. Even the US sytem, while probably the best republican model, has serious shortfalls. We would gain nothing from a republic and lose much from our existing stable, relatively egalitarian system of government. The monarchy may be unelected, but that is it beauty no corruption from those vying for power. The monarchy is a power base that is above corruption from the ones weilding the power (politicians). Elections ensure those weilding the power do so with relative propriety, while the head (the monarchy) remains stable and incorruptible. Zimbabwe). Australia, NZ, Canada, even India).Think of Zimbabwe. Under British Constitutional rule, it was the bread basket of Africa. As a republic it has become a basket case.Keep a republic as far away from Australia as possibleYou taking a very literal definition of conservative (not changing anything ever). By that definition, Kim Jong Il is a conservative but Margaret Thatcher is definitiely not she be one of the most progressive leaders ever. You might be half right if you talk about ultra traditional social conservatives, but you are way off the mark if referring to economic conservativm.Economic conservatism basically lets private industry get on with the job, which allows innovation and new technology to flourish. There is ample empricial evidence for this very few things of note have ever been invented by government or by citizens of communist counties with heavy economic regulation.Together they have cobbled together a strawman of what conservatives are, based on exaggeration of a few simplified principles. Like Roger suggesting conservatives would be opposed to the invention of the wheel because it was not old. Problem is, lefties believe all things are political, and politics does not invent individuals do that.Talking to lefties is so often like talking to some Uni students who think they know everything because they have an answer to everything, even when they are wrong and on topics they know nothing about. All the little hypocritical lefties come out to play with their insipid notions of philosphical meaning; bazza, your tripe is probably the most egregious coming as it does from an avowed alarmist. After all what is AGW but misonewism and future shock based on an infantile revision of climate history as being stationary and Eden like until bad humanity came along and starting burning fossil fuel. That is what AGW is: a social wet dream based on a mythologised rendering of a perfect past; that isn conservatism, just a desire to return to the womb. Now run along and play in the sand pit and leave the discussion the grown ups
