Jonathon Brennan

On arrival I felt instantly welcome at the university. One of the first things I did was attend a campus tour which, on seeing all the redevelopment and listening to the enthusiastic student ambassadors, filled me with excitement. Coming from classic short sparkles ugg boots clearance someone that wasn't originally planning on going to university, this first experience at Plymouth ultimately helped sway my decision to enrol on a course. Walking through the recently re developed city centre and up onto the Hoe, which overlooks Plymouth Sound, I genuinely felt that I could make the city my home. Plymouth is a welcoming and exciting university in a city built in one of UGG Boots Clearance the most beautiful parts of Britain it's basically a perfect match.

"Plymouth's geographic location between moorland and the sea makes it an ideal place to study the natural sciences. The course has a strong emphasis on hands on field research skills, with opportunities for international fieldwork. I went to Malaysia in the second year which was both beautiful and eye opening as the signs of large scale deforestation were very obvious. I expected regular contact with researchers and lecturers, being taught up to date and relevant science, opportunities to partner and work with external organisations and plenty of time outdoors. I can honestly say that the Environmental Science course delivered on all fronts, with the skills learnt being applied in my current role with Natural England.

"I came to Plymouth University immediately after my A Levels. Many of my friends had gained work experience or spent time abroad before starting university. I think either way is fine and I have no ugg bailey button triplet 1873 grey boots] regrets in my approach as there were plenty of work and volunteer opportunities whilst studying working as a student ambassador is a great opportunity. Plus you have a four month summer so I was able to travel and work in both the USA and South Africa between academic years.

"I had an excellent experience at Plymouth and have some very happy memories of my time there. The course found a good balance between the many scientific disciplines uggs on sale for women in clearance fox fur I covered the 'core' sciences such as chemistry, ecology and biology, but also the social sciences, politics and economics. This inter disciplinary approach gave me a firm grounding in the skills required for my current role with Natural England. This variety in my job remit requires a firm understanding across disciplines, which the Environmental Science course helped prepare me for. I would say the only negative of the course was that it didn't include a compulsory industry experience in the UGGS Clearance Sale Outlet form of a sandwich year or placement. Having now done my MSc which did require this I can see the benefits of such a programme as it helps you apply your learning to real life scenarios. I overcame this by proactively seeking industry experience, forming a partnership for my final year research project with a great white shark cage diving company in South Africa and the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.

"I received some careers advice through my third year of studies. I found it to be accessible and it helped shape my CV and approach to preparing for interviews.

"Volunteering with both the National Marine Aquarium and Devon Wildlife Trust at the weekend was very rewarding. It allowed me to meet new people, gain new skills, and helped open up opportunities. Presenting in front of a large school group at the aquarium developed my presentation and communication skills, making me feel more confident when presenting to academics and peers. Whilst in the south west I tried my hand at surfing, snorkelling and 'coasteering', which are great ways to relax after a stressful period of studying there's nothing better to take your mind of exams than jumping 15ft into the sea and traversing along a cliff (professionally supervised of course). Living between the moorland and sea opened up a range of opportunities for spending time with friends and relaxing

"My thesis was titled 'Analysing the tourist perception of shark ecotourism: white shark cage diving in South Africa and sharks in aquariums'. It represented an international collaboration and sought to look at whether shark encounters and experiences helped tourists better understand the conservation needs of sharks. This experience allowed me to apply my academic knowledge to answer a 'real life' industry question and was well received by both industry partners, hopefully contributing to positive changes as a result.

"If anything the degree re affirmed my interest in the environment and introduced me to the opportunities that are available to environmental science graduates whether that's in consultancy, regulation or further research, there are plenty of career options with an environmental degree

"I would suggest that you don't purchase any text books before starting the degree. As the course covers a range of disciplines you'll be referring to many different textbooks, journals and other sources. I bought several textbooks before starting the degree (which cost me a fortune) and I only used them several times. My advice is to use the well stocked library and only buy when you know you're going to be using the book a lot. I would however advise that you invest in some good waterproofs, walking boots and a thermos flask (or similar) they'll get well used.

"I was very fortunate and worked for a year within the External Relations department at Plymouth University, continuing on from my Student Ambassador position. This helped develop my professional interpersonal skills and improve my confidence, whilst allowing me to save for further study. Having decided to undertake an MSc I found it reinforced my knowledge and skills gained from my Environmental Science degree. A contribution of skills from my BSc degree and Masters, in addition to work experience and volunteering, were pivotal in allowing me to gain my current position with Natural England.

"I'd recommend studying at Plymouth, and in fact I already have many times. I had an excellent student experience, achieved a well respected degree that was instrumental in gaining employment whilst living and studying in a welcoming and beautifully located city.".
