A Story of Care touches many

It was one of those eerily quiet nights in the hospital a time that is often filled only with your own thoughts.

As challenging as the gruelling cancer treatments were, Jim Mulcahy remembers the loneliness just as much.

That's one of the reasons he recalls so fondly a late night visit from a veteran nurse to his room. After taking a seat next to his bed, she kicked off her shoes and stretched out her legs.

"She spent about 45 minutes with me and we had a great talk," he said, smiling as if it just happened yesterday.

The conversation in that Halifax hospital room centered on family and friends, careers and experiences, but not the IVs and treatments that had consumed his life.

"It made a huge impact," Mulcahy recalled of the moment of comfort.

That personal touch can also take the form of a gentle hand hold one that came from a young red haired nurse.

"She didn't have to do it, UGG Boots Clearance but she saw what I was going through and it made a world of difference," Mulcahy said.

It was a simple gesture, but just what he needed as he lay in the fetal position on a slab as a corkscrew type device torques into his hip, the first needle breaking and a second attempt required for the bone marrow procedure.

Mulcahy reflects on his experiences in the system as he lives with end stage lymphoma while caring for his wife, Sarah, who has Huntington's disease.

"I didn't know anything except for the fact that I talked a lot of times with my eyes closed," he laughed when asked about the finished product, noting his embarrassment.

When he relayed that feeling to his children, Mulcahy said the response was 'you always talk with your eyes closed.'

His eyes may have been closed on occasion during the film, but his story has helped open many in the healthcare profession.

"We feel really grateful to Jim and Sarah for sharing their time with us and making the effort to get the message out because when people are strong and healthy, and everything is going well, they sometimes just don't think about this," Heather Jewers, a St. School of Nursing professor, said.

As part of her work with the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, she helps develop competency levels in palliative and end of life care that nursing graduates will be expected to accomplish.

"We have a responsibility to ensure that remains a part of care. We felt it was important to get input from patient and family representatives," Jewers said.

Having met Mulcahy a couple years earlier, she remembered his interest in doing what he could to help improve care. She invited him to join UGG Boots Clearance Outlet the advisory committee, which has worked on developing these competencies.

"I think it is important to remember the approach sometimes within the healthcare system there can be a focus on task and kind of 'getting the job done.'

"People can sometimes get focussed on the disease and doing the tasks instead of looking at the whole person," Jewers said.

She noted the palliative care philosophy involves the "whole person approach" and what is happening to that individual.

"It is also promotes patient dignity and quality of life."

Jewers said that is important for someone coping with any illness whether it is terminal or any other major change in health, which she noted "can be traumatic for people."

She added it also leaves people very vulnerable.

"It is so important that people recognize you as an individual and acknowledge what's important to you," Jewers said.
