Alternative ways to light up on the Fourth of July

Stickers and decals are an easy way to add glowinthedark style to a kid s room wall or ceiling.

But that doesn't mean we can't find other ways to add some light and excitement to our summer nights.

In fact, 2011 could go down in history as the year glowing in the dark came of age.

Nature has always managed her own luminescent fun with everything from fireflies to schools of luminescent fish.

But since Southern New Mexico lacks the ocean and damp forest habitats for such critters, we'll just have to find ways to come up with our own glow fun.

Edmundo Resendez of Las Cruces has fond memories of glowinthedark adventures both natural and manmade.

"We used to go out with black lights and find scorpions that would glow blue at night. I grew up in Texas, and there were some swampy areas where you could find fireflies. I knew kids who would smash them and write their names to glow on their arms," said Resendez, who added he wasn't personally into luminescent bug guts graffiti, but enjoyed luminescent paint for art projects.

Midwestern natives report a somewhat more lightningbugfriendly catchandrelease game, capturing fireflies and putting them in a ventilated jar to share their eerie light for a while.

A recent trend allows humans to be luminescent, too, if they're willing to get a "stealth" tattoo. Using a special Advertisement

ink that can only be seen in the dark, the tattoos are reportedly invisible by day.

Some online sources express concerns about the safety of the ink and expense and availability of the stealths. Summer silly season may not be the best time to make such a commitment albeit a sometimes invisible one so you might want to opt for a glowing temporary version (available online), instead.

And there are lots of other ways to add some phosphorescent fun to summer nights. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Glowing fingers and toes: Do an online search for glowinthedark fingernail polish. Several brands are available.

Glow shoes: Nike, Converse and Reebok are among brands that have sneakers that will light up your nights.

Laces: Not ready to spring for glow shoes? Online sources offer glowinthedark laces in shades of purple, blue, green, yellow, neon pink and more.

Glowinthedark fashions: An online search came up with Tshirts, high heels, boxer shorts, pajamas,Monster Beats By Dre, purses and other fashion accessories and some glam evening gowns for your Barbie doll.

Be a glow artist: There are several new kits for kids on the market offering luminescent art opportunities. Crayola's Washable Glow Chalk kit lets kids mix up and mold chalk in four colors and lots of fun shapes to create their own sidewalk or patio murals, which glow for about four hours.

Paint your own glow: Add doityourself luminescence to everything from bikes to baseball caps. Hobby Lobby in Las Cruces has florescent paints, including a Palmer Paint sampler with little pots in six colors for $1.99.

Glow d with stickers and decals: Speaking of retro, help the kids create their own solar systems with stickon stars, planets, comets and more. Find kits starting at under $4 at Hobby Lobby, or search online and at the gift shop at the Space Murals Museum, 12450 Highway 70 in Organ, just east of Las Cruces.

"We have some sets with glowinthedark space shuttles,Cheap Beats By Dre, stars and moons and Earth and the planets," said the museum's Sherry Graves.

During summer travels, look for other glowing goodies at shops, museums and events in Roswell (UFOs, space crafts, etc.) and the gift shop at the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo.

Glow sticks: Make bracelets, necklaces and other fun items with the flexible variety or simply wave 'em around as ouchfree,Cheap Monster Beats,Cheap Beats By Dre,Monster Beats By Dre, firesafe alternatives to sparklers. They're available at area dollar stores and superstores like Target.

Toys and games can provide some educational night light fun. Scientific Explorer's Glow in the Dark Fun Lab Science Kit offers ops to "create a light wand, make a glow stick, and even generate a humanpowered light." Do an online search to find other fun glowinthedark toys and games.
