We are restoring a row home from 1890's and before we move in, I am choosing lighting, home decor, etc. Downstairs, I have chosen antiqued brass finish (period lighting) for the living room and library, but we've updated the kitchen and installed stainless steel appliances, so I was hoping to go with chrome schoolhouse lights. This leaves me with the dining room and foyer, where I haven't chosen lighting yet.(People pass through the dining room to get to the kitchen from the living room.) I've been looking at antiqued brass for the dining room also, but I am worried this finish will look strange when I'm sitting in the dining room looking at the silver finish of the schoolhouse lights in the kitchen. I was looking at a crystal chandelier/sconces for the foyer, but only seem to find silver or bright gold wiring on those type of chandeliers. Have I made a mistake by thinking I absolutely need silver/chrome finish to match the stainless steel appliances? (The cabinets are antique general store quartersawn oak, Pandora Whimsical Lights Pink Charm so would antiqued brass match with stainless steel appliances in that case? I haven't ordered them yet, so it's not to late.) Would a silver/chrome finish look strange when I am sitting in the dining room with antiqued brass finish lighting? Am I over thinking this or is it really important to be consistent with finishes throughout? Should I be Pandora Bracelets concerned with matching lighting to window hardware and door knobs, etc?With the popularity of stainless steel and nickel finish appliances, we encounter this question regularly. It reminds me of the late 1970's and early 80's when everything in a room was matching: the tables, the lamps, the shades, curtains, etc. We eventually discovered that this can lead to a dull and uninteresting room.Forget the appliances and Pandora Whimsical Lights Pink Charm coordinate (not match) the lighting fixture finishes within a particular room instead. You do not have to use the exact same finish within a single room but do not jump from antique brass to silver in the same room. Different colors of silver, nickel, pewter, gray, etc. work well in the same room. The same applies to antique brass finishes within the same room. Simply forget about what might be visible in an adjacent room.We usually recommend to our customers that most decorating be done within the confines of your personal taste. Keep this in mind with everything you do and everything that someone else recommends.
