Aloha Week Festival Parade<br><br>Hawaiian Pa'u Princesses and their attendants showed the art of equestrian procession (horse back riding) and floral arranging this past Saturday September 25, 2010 as a part of the Aloha Week Festival Parade in Honolulu. This years theme was Mele Ailana, Celebrate Island Music. The beautiful art form of lei making shows the talent of the many hands that prepares flowers for the wreath arrangements to be worn by horses and riders. Long flowing silk velvet dresses dates back to the late 1870's, when Hawaiian Culture with that of European Culture here in Hawaii, were mixed forming what we see today in Pa'u Riding womens outfits. It takes years to learn the art of Pa'u horse back riding. One as I can imagine, learns to care and love of the horse they intend to ride in the parade, staging and practicing and of course its history. Many long hours go into preparing the leis worn by the pa'u riding units. Every Hawaiian Island is represented by it's unique colors and island flowers.<br><br>Island of Hawai'i Flora: 'Ohia Lehua Color: Red<br><br>Saturday, early in the morning as the sun peaked over the Ko'olau Mountain Range and lighten the Honolulu city skyline, Pa'u riding units arrived at the Ala Moana Beach Park to set up their units in high spirits. Long before the parade started the riding units gathered for morning prayer, some singing Hawaiian songs and last minute rehearsals. They are also being judged by official Aloha Week Pa'u Judges at the beginning of the parade route on their leis and how they ride their horses. Last minute words of encouragement are also being shared amongst families and friends of the riders who gather for this day. Mounting of the parade horses are a sight to see, emotions and the Aloha Spirit fills the air by all those involved. So much dedication to preparing the look of these ladies and gentlemen, when finally completed is a thing someone who appreciates Hawaiian Culture must see in person.
