Geoff Goodyear appointed Honorary Colonel of 5 Wing Goose Bay
Geoff Goodyear was appointed Honorary Colonel of 5 Wing Goose Bay in a ceremony held on May 27 at the base in Happy Valley Goose Bay.
"It's an honour to be here today and to have this incredible opportunity to become the 5 Wing Honorary Colonel," Goodyear said. "I'm looking forward to strengthen the links and relations among the Wing members and our local communities."
Goodyear, a former officer in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, recently retired as the President and CEO of Universal Helicopters Newfoundland and Labrador LP. He has been a helicopter pilot for 37 years and was the recipient of Transport Canada's Aviation Safety Award and the inaugural recipient of Eurocopter Canada's "Innovation in Safety" award.
A noted photographer, Goodyear recently published a book of photographs of Labrador's Inuit homelands in conjunction with the Nunatsiavut Government.
"On behalf of all the Wing members I would like to officially welcome Honorary Colonel Goodyear into our family," said Lieutenant UGG Boots Clearance Sale Colonel Luc Sabourin, 5 Wing Goose Bay Commander. "Even before his investiture, Honorary Colonel Goodyear was already involved with 5 Wing on many fronts. As an example, he donated some of his artwork for one of our major annual charity events. It was a natural decision to nominate him for this important appointment. I also want to thank Mr. Sterling Peyton for his dedicated service during the past seven years as our Honorary Colonel."
Peyton, who was present at the ceremony, said he has been surrounded by family members in uniform all his life it was a privilege for him to wear the Royal Canadian Air Force tunic and represent 5 Wing Goose Bay.
Honorary Colonels work behind the scenes and provide an essential connection between the community and the Canadian Armed Forces. The Royal Canadian Air Force traditionally nominates them for its Wings and units across the country.
