How To Get Started in CrossFit Known as the "Sport of Fitness," CrossFit has grown from a small niche into a global fitness revolution. Thousands of dedicated CrossFit gyms have opened around the world, and the annual Games are broadcast on television each summer. The workouts are an intense mishmash of fullbody functional movements, and you'll rarely do the same thing more than once. Maybe you've seen what the program has to offer, and you think you might be interested, but what is the best way to actually get started? In this lens, we'll look at some of the things you might want to consider before becoming a crossfitter. Image used under Creative Commons from lululemon athletica. There are essentially two ways to start CrossFit. You can either join a gym that specializes in CrossFit programming (known in the community as a "box"), or do the programming on your own. However you decide to go about it, though, keep in mind that you are in charge of your own safety. Unlike the isolation exercises typically seen in large commercial gyms, CrossFit features complex, powerful weightlifting movements, and you can hurt yourself if you aren't careful. Listen to your body. It's up to you to understand your limits and know when to stop. That being said, the coaches in charge of running classes in a box should (and almost always do) work with beginners to make sure their form is correct to avoid injuries. So even if you plan to grab the day's workout online and do it on your own, it might be a good idea to spend a few weeks or months at a box getting proficient at your movements. There's this notion floating around out there that every crossfitter does the same workout, and that is mostly true. But not always. All CrossFit workouts are scalable, which means that they can be adapted based on the athlete's limits. The idea is to reduce the amount of weight, the number of repetitions, or actually change the movement until it is possible for you to complete the workout. For instance, if a workout calls for 60 pullups, and you can only do four, there's no point in trying to do the workout as prescribed you'd be in the gym for hours. Instead, scale the movement by using an exercise band, or substitute some other pulling movement. The idea is to work the same muscle group, but in a way that you can actually finish. If you join a box, you just need normal workout clothes nothing too special. Depending on the box you go to, you might need to bring a water bottle. And most crossfitters keep a notebook listing their workouts and results (although you can do this on a spreadsheet at your house, if you prefer). As you move along in the program, you might consider investing in some weightlifting shoes, or just some flat sneakers. The thick soles on most running shoes tilt your body forward slightly, which can hurt your form as you lift greater amounts of weight. Some other typical items you can get inexpensively are lacrosse balls to work out soreness (sit on the floor, put the lacrosse ball under your leg, and roll around on it), or stretch bands to help you increase mobility in your joints. Finally, a word about the CrossFit community. Crossfitters are passionate about fitness. They grunt while working out, and speak in a cryptic dialect the rest of the time (everything is "wad" this and "21159" that). It can be intimidating at first. Relax. Walk into a box or join an online forum, and everybody will be happy to welcome you, and help you get acclimated. Nobody expects you to set records in your first week. There's certainly some friendly competition in the workouts, but everybody's just there to get better. Really, it's okay.
