In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar is neither a pet-slave who says “No!” nor the son of Zira and Cornelius. He’s lab-grown and, thanks to Serkis (and visual supervisors Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, and, I’m sure many others), his hybrid personality comes into being before our eyes. Having modeled the expressions of Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Serkis is primed to take a primate to the next evolutionary level, and his thoughts are beautifully articulated. His Caesar rises up, sniffs, takes the measure of the space, and calculates his options in a way that makes you see just how new his neural pathways are. Victimized by the prison’s dominant ape, Caesar concocts a strategy that’s part Chimp 101, part Sun Tzu. And the other apes — orangutans, gorillas — follow him avidly. It should be said that Caesar has a humanistic side. When he kills, it’s by accident. But there are hints that his cohorts are not so forgiving, and that, in the inevitable sequel(s), our chimp surrogate might suffer the fate of his namesake Julius (or of Lenin at the hands of Stalin)., watch rise of the planet of the apes It’s likely that the writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and the director Rupert Wyatt were as familiar with Nim — who was mistakenly thought to understand human language and was later tragically abandoned by his handlers — as they were with the “Apes” franchise. (The filmmakers nod to the earlier movies repeatedly, as with a lost space team and a toy Statue of Liberty.) Then again, the exploitation of animals in the name of human progress is a horror-fiction staple, and in the 1960s and ’70s screens overflowed with marauding rats, bunnies, sharks and yet more apes as the magical animals of the Walt Disney generation gave way to fanged and furry avengers of the hippie nation. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” may be primarily a calculated business decision, but it’s also a smiley wag (or flick) of the environmental finger., watch rise of the planet of the apes The production notes for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” starring James Franco acting almost as slack as he did at the Oscars, calls it “the first live-action film in the history of movies to star, and be told from the point of view of, a sentient animal – a character with human-like qualities, who can strategize, organize, and ultimately lead a revolution, and with whom audiences will experience a real emotional bond.”, Some old potion is served up in a reasonably spiffy new bottle in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Resurrecting a lucrative franchise for another go-round 43 years after Charlton Heston first found himself on the short end of the evolutionary pyramid, Fox has wisely steered clear of attempting another remake of the original, which was bungled so badly by Tim Burton a decade back, settling instead on a contemporary scientific yarn that serves as a plausible prequel to all the other films. Strong action, special effects and by far the most credible ape “performances” yet seen will spell box office to inspire chest-thumping in all markets., watch rise of the planet of the apes Serkis invests Caesar with a full measure of personality through the indelibly human look in his eyes. The ape cast is rounded out not only by chimps but by a memorable gorilla and orangutan, both of them fine supporting players. The special effects are most convincing and involving, particularly as the apes move through San Francisco and across the bridge in their attempt to take over George Lucas territory up north.
