The Commission of Inquiry (COI) set up to examine the sugar industry has found it impractical to overcome a challenge to develop a plan that will return the Industry to profitability. The report laid in the National Assembly on Wednesday indicated that the “realities” facing the industry do not allow for such a drastic turnaround anytime soon.Further,Amir Johnson Jersey, the COI has recommended that Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) be privatized. However, the report stated that the recommendations contained lay the foundation for bridging the current internal situation in GuySuCo with a more viable option. The report pointed out that there is no one package which can be recommended that will envelope all of the solutions and remedies required. There will be need for an ongoing review of what recommendations are approved.“It will be an evolving situation and the dynamics must recognize changing circumstances.”The mandate given to the Commission was to develop a series of five-year plans leading up to 2030. But the Commission, having regard to the vicissitudes and dynamics adverted to in the report, has decided that any such 15-year plan would be more theoretical than practical.Minister of Agriculture, Noel HolderThe Commission has therefore limited its attention to the more foreseeable future leading up to privatization.UNREALISTIC BUSINESS PLAN PROJECTIONSIt was reported by the Commission that there is widespread agreement among industry analysts that GuySuCo’s Business Plans and projections, cannot stand up to close scrutiny, even for a period as restricted as the very first year of its projections.“Indeed, as GuySuCo’s projections go further into the future they are revealed to be extremely unrealistic. Most of the stakeholders who have worked at GuySuCo previously,http://www.authenticjerseysnfl.us.com/Authentic-Nike-Buffalo-Bills-Football-Jerseys/, and who have presented to the COI, have bemoaned the all-round decline in the corporation’s managerial,Authentic Carolina Panthers Jersey, implementation, and operational capacity.”GOVT. HAS TO LET GOThe COI has found that the best thing for the government to do now that GuySuCo is at a “point of no return” is to sell and interestingly, it was reported that there have already been expressions of interest.“Based on both the financial and economic analyses,Alex Anzalone Jersey, the only rational conclusion which can be drawn is that which the COI had arrived at by consensus. The Government needs to decide urgently whether it can afford to continue, repeatedly,Anders Bjork Jersey, funding GuySuCo from the National Budget (via bailouts) in order to remain as a producer of raw bulk sugar for export. To repeat such “bailouts” and expect different vastly improved results from GuySuCo would be irrational.”In light of this, the COI has deemed that a continued state-run GuySuCo in its present form/structure is strategically unacceptable. Further, it was stated that it would be an inefficient financial and economic decision if the government chooses to hold on to GuySuCo.“A decisive shift to private ownership and control of the assets now employed in sugar production has to be an essential element of any long-term resolution of the present paradoxical situation.”By consensus it has been recommended that GuySuCo be sold as soon as possible. The report stated,Joel Ayayi Jersey, “The process should start as early as practicable and aim to be completed within three years.”The COI recommended that the state should divest itself of all assets activities and operations currently associated with GuySuCo. Nevertheless, it recommends another bailout.“Financial support in the short term will be needed and this should be provided by the government in a timely basis.”“In the interval, as the privatization process is awaited, the new management of GuySuCo must focus on basic essentials to rehabilitate the fields, factories and infrastructure of GuySuCo. There should be no accommodation for any projects which will demand limited funds. This is aimed at making the estates more saleable and attractive to investors,Babe Ruth Jersey, local and foreign. A few expressions of interest both formal and informal have been received.”

By Harold A. BascomAs we continue our series on Guyanese myths, we bring you this four-part story from the imagination of author and three-time Guyana Prize winner Harold Bascom.Yvonne Holder doesn’t believe in ghosts. You don’t believe in such stuff when you’re a trained psychologist and crisis counsellor. But, while on assignment in Port Kaituma to investigate a rash of suicides, it slowly becomes clear to her that something is stalking young men from the North West community…something released from the ruins of Jonestown… something that would soon stalk someone she loved… “It’s interesting that all the newspapers wrote about ‘a spate of suicides in the Northwest district region…” said Yvonne Holder, psychologist and crisis counsellor. “But not one of them said that all those four suicides took place in one Northwest district mining town.”“Four young men,” murmured the assistant. “All from that one place; don’t sound catholic.” She stood next to the filing cabinet nearest the window out of which poinsettias, bloomed tropical red, in the windless humidity of Georgetown.“Why?” the psychologist asked rhetorically.“Well… that’s why, the day after tomorrow, you’re flying into the Port Kaituma.”The charwoman, entering with a wheeled bin behind her, piped in: “Port Kaituma. That is near Jonestown, where crazy-man Jimmy make over nine-hundred, damn-fool American people commit suicide—you don’t remember that, Miss Holder?”“And who would forget that, Beulah?” the young psychologist said.“Well…” Beulah continued, taking a brush and dustpan out of the bin. “If four young men kill themself in five months—just like that? Eh? It could only mean one thing: Evil!—and what you could expect happening in a place like just ten miles from Jonestown that must be haunted like hell! … You know what it is to have a place where over nine hundred earthbound jombie crying out in that darkness?”The assistant was suddenly staring, stony-eyed, out the window. The psychologist chuckled. “You Guyanese people really superstitious, you know,”“And you is what, girl?” the bespectacled charwoman with the hip-shorted gait said challengingly to the young psychologist. “You’se Guyanese too! So, if you going to that place to keep workshop—I’d advise you to make sure to walk with some kinda guard! Don’t fly to that place unprotected!”Chuckling, the psychologist said, “So I should walk with a bodyguard or something, Miss Buelah?”Beulah Plass stopped cleaning, adjusted her bifocals on her nose, and fixed the young psychologist with a stern glare before lifting a scolding index finger. “Miss Holder!—you’s a very bright girl—and I respect you for that! But, listen … to … me! —not because I does sweep offices I don’t have sense!”“We would never say that, Beulah,” the assistant piped in.“Never meant to offend, Beulah—I’m sorry…” Yvonne Holder said.“You walk with a guard! —something ‘round you neck or something! I got a nice little guard chain I will bring for you tomorrow! Wear it! What you could lose? And if anybody see it, all they going see is a nice gold chain.”“Okay,2018 NFL Draft Jersey, Ms. Beulah,” said the psychologist. “But just tell me what’s on this guard chain—anything that smells?”“No chile; the chain I will bring for you don’t smell. It got a little pendant-thing like a small egg at the bottom. But what it have inside! It strong enough to repel any spirit—any demon that try to come ‘round you! I can swear by that!”“Powerful medicine!” the assistant said.“Yes!—It real powerful!” said the charwoman, and continued with her cleaning.Yvonne Holder thought of her sibling,Cheap Nike Basketball Jerseys, Brent—whom she always referred to as her ‘lil, red-skin brother’.… Beulah sounded so much like him. Brent took it upon himself to recall myriad stories of the supernatural they had both grown with—stories that had been told to them by their maternal grandmother who lived with them. She could never have foreseen that those very stories would have made her brother the popular figure he became through his weekly column for a local newspaper, ‘Stories of the supernatural’.Brent, unlike her, embraced psychic possibilities—spiritual possibilities. She, however, was quick to scoff at anything science could not corroborate; and every time, he would respond, “Vonny, my sister…your disbelief in something, does not negate its existence.”She smiled whimsically to herself. Maybe I should let Brent follow me to this place—why not? She meant to get to the bottom of the suicides. Brent and his investigative skills would come in most helpful—why not?He would enjoy it—maybe he might even find material for an article or two. She remembered too, that he had always wanted to visit Jonestown,Cheap Soccer Jerseys Authentic, but had never gotten around to it.She called him that evening, after she got home, to see if he was working on anything that he couldn’t take a break from. (He wasn’t.)“You heard of the ‘spate’ of suicides in the Northwest district?” (He had.) “Where do you think it’s happening?” (He called Matthews Ridge; he called Hosororo; he called Arakaka; he called Morawhanna; he called Mabaruma…) “Nope—none of the above! All of those four suicides took place in one place—”“Port Kaituma.”In her mind she saw him nodding conclusively.“Near Jonestown, and suicides involved…” he said. “Interesting. … And you want me to come up there.”“If you want to.”“Understatement of the year, Vonny.” He chuckled. “You know how long I meant to see Jonestown?”*Yvonne Holder stood on the verandah of the posh guesthouse she stayed at in the rustic mining settlement, and absently fingered the ornately decorated, egg-shaped pendant like a miniature Faberge egg on the chain around her neck. What was inside?“But what it have inside! It strong enough to repel any spirit—any demon that try to come ‘round you! I can swear by that!”Right now it didn’t matter what was inside; it didn’t bother her, anyway. This was the day her brother was scheduled to arrive. Since he never called to cancel, she knew he was on the twin engine Lysander that overflew the guesthouse a little over twenty minutes ago. She presumed that in a matter of minutes, the Land Rover that transported people from the Port Kaituma from the airstrip would soon pull into the street below, and disgorge her brother. She found herself thinking of another young man: Sean La Cruz, and the young men who had taken their own lives—the eldest twenty; the youngest, seventeen. The loss of Sean La Crus,World Soccer Shop, however, seemed to have impacted more than the other three. She heard about him at the peer-counseling workshop she had convened for the locals two days ago—one day after she had flown in from Georgetown. It had gone well for the most part: She had focused on the causes of suicide—alcoholism, mental illness, and various forms of abuse and depression. She spoke about how each could help a family member or a neighbour, who was perceived as having the kinds of problems that might lead to suicide. She stressed the need to be aware of individuals drinking too much; crying—and of course, individuals who spoke of killing themselves.Coming to the end of it, she had opened the floor to the residents. An elderly man rose, hesitantly,Angel Di Maria Jersey, with something like a rolled poster. “Miss, Holder,” he began. “My name is Phillip Pires. What I want to say is this: that what going on in this community is not natural—I have a mind dat is something very spiritual—very spiritual, and I believe—you hear me?—I believe that it has to do with a dream I’ve been having…”“This is interesting, Mr. Pires.” The young psychologist from the City said. “Do you want to tell me about it?”He began unfolding the large cardboard furled in his hands. “I will not only tell you … I will show on this chart, what I think is—”A burly, curly-haired resident reared to his feet. “Phillip!—why you have to embarrass we like this, eh? Why you have to give visitors from Georgetown the impression that all o’ we is damn backward bush people?—Why yo don’t shut you stupid mouth and stop embarrassing we?—you think this nice lady come all the way from the City to listen to your damn, crazy dreams? Eh?”“Who you calling, crazy, Victor James? Eh?—You don’t have any roots in Port Kaituma—so what you know about me?”“I know that you is a mystical damn fraud like yo damn brother!—Who give you the right to come here with you nonsense? —Who want to hear that the boys committed suicide because they been into Jonestown?—People always going into Jonestown for curiosity—and how come they don’t dead?” He drew his teeth and turned to the psychologist. “Miss Holder… my name is Victor James. Them four chaps killing they-self, because dem probably was experimenting with drugs! They getting it too damn easy from across the blasted border! Look!—the La Cruz boy—nice, nice boy—decent family! Eh? And what happen next? Days before he dead—he start acting like he was going out he damn head—and before you know it—he plunge into the river last month and kill heself! Eh? If that wasn’t the drugs he did using cause it—I don’t know what!”Then he glared at the elderly Phillip Pires and ended: “Old man!—why you don’t go home! This is not the place for you dotish dreams!”There was a titter of laughter after which a woman, of mixed race, stood. “James! The big man only saying what on he mind—and he too got a right to talk like any one o’ we! Look at who killing they-self in this place—young, young people—nuffa dem who ent even gat a chick or a child to have worries so as to make them depressed with this economy we in, and mek them commit suicide! Most of the few old time suicides we had in this place was by men who uses to drink and cuss and beat up they wife and children!—But look what going on here!—Young men!—four young men ups and kill theyself—and I doubt that any one of them used!—As a matter of fact, them four boys was some of Port Kaituma’s brightest! Not one o’ them young boys was an alcoholic like plenty o’ the fools your age that we have on this landing!”The burly man shot back: “Petty!—you telling me that dat last boy, Sean La Cruz, who dive between dat trawler and the iron barge at the waterfront, never uses to use some drugs or something?—You remember how, in he last days, he uses to walk around like he in a blasted daze?”Someone began to wail. The psychologist’s skin grew. Through the sobbing came a broken voice: “You can’t scandal mih nephew name like that, Victor James! Sean was a good, good boy… He was a good boy!”Yvonne Holder called for order, and made a note about the possibility that widespread drug-use amongst the youth population may have caused the suicides. She had then rounded off the meeting, shared handouts; and thanked everyone for coming.*Yvonne was intrigued; she needed to understand this tension surrounding the deaths of four young men from the small gold-mining community. So, she had invited the Regional Chairwoman, Shelley Wright, who had sat with her at the workshop’s head table, to have dinner with her at the guest house.Just after they were finished eating, Yvonne Holder said,A.J. Klein Jersey, “What kind of young man was this Sean La Cruz, Miss, Wright?”“You can call me, Shelley, Miss Holder.” The Regional Chairwoman sighed.Yvonne laughed. “Then you might as well call me, Yvonne.”“Well…” continued the Regional Chairwoman, “Sean La Cruz was a quiet young man—very quiet—a kind of dreamer.” She nodded. “Ambitious; he wanted to be an archeologist like Dennis Williams who started the Walter Roth Museum in Georgetown.” She sighed. “His parents—dredge owners—still don’t understand what happened. Nobody, so far, can explain why on that blackout night this boy—just run out of his room, down the street and threw himself between an oil pontoon and a trawler.”She shook her head and continued: “And his aunt at the workshop,Andy Lee Jersey, was right—Sean was never into that marijuana smoking or using that cocaine business!—he even had a girlfriend.”“I’d love to speak with his parents—the La Cruzes?”“They left the area. They left for America. But you can talk to his girlfriend, Irene.”“Anyone ever spoke with her?”The Regional chairwoman shrugged. “I’m not sure, but I’d love if you can speak to her.” What people need here is grief counseling and things like that.” Shook her head. “Don’t happen.”“I’ll talk to her,” Yvonne Holder said; then like an afterthought asked about the man, Phillip Pires. “Why was this man James so hard on him?”The Regional Chairwoman chuckled lightly. “Well… Mr. Pires is just one of the village spiritists—if there’s such a word.” She yawned. “As for Victor James? He and Pires always having it out—they have history.”“He was all set to tell me about some kind of dream.”“Well…” the Regional Chairwoman said, teasing the last of the pasta in her plate, “he’s been telling all who would listen, about a recurring dream he gets…”“About?”“About darkness hanging over Port Kaituma. Some kinda bad omen that has to do with Jonestown.”Photo saved as Supernatural photo for Sunday(ATTENTION LAYOUT: PLEASE LEAVE ITALICS WHERE PLACED IN STORY)

…Eventually, Chronicle Newspaper should revert to private ownership By Kiana Wilburg A free, pluralistic and independent media community, on all platforms, is important for facilitating goodPresident, David Grangergovernance and transparency. With an aim of ensuring that this is achieved on all levels and to the highest degree, President David Granger has given his thoughts on the role of the state media recently and how he sees its future in the dispensation of information. On the televised show,Andrew Benintendi Jersey, The Public Interest,Andre Johnson Jersey, the Head of State noted that the state has a responsibility, particularly in a country like Guyana, to provide current information. Granger said that most media houses are located in Georgetown or on the coastland. This,World Soccer Shop, he said, has resulted in a large part of the country not being covered by the private media. He said that the private media, to some degree, is driven by profit and there is no profit in setting up a station at Lethem or Aishalton. Granger said that most of these areas do not get the full benefit of information and as such, the state has a responsibility to provide information to those communities whether it is on health issues, natural hazards, epidemic diseases or threats to the communities in those areas. But beyond the role of providing information, the President said that he feels that media must be free. He said that is where the private media has a role. The Head of State said that he does not believe that the state should attempt to control the private media. He hopes that the state withdraws from competing with the private media and just pays attention to its primary role of providing public information.Granger said that under the Constitution,Adam Oates Jersey, it is quite clear that all citizens have certain rights to transmit and receive information. He noted that the state cannot contradict or contravene the Constitution by preventing citizens from receiving information. He said that in this regard, it is considered carte blanche for the private media to operate, but within certain limits of course.“But as I see it, eventually the state must withdraw from competing with the private media in terms of publishing newspapers or television services. The state’s role is to provide public information and I see that organizations like GINA (Government Information Agency) and NCN (National Communications Network) could continue but the commercial arms like Chronicle newspaper, in due course, should eventually revert to private ownership,” expressed the President. He continued, “It is a period of transition but I don’t believe that we need to get involved in that type of activity anymore.”Being the historian he is, Granger said that the state media had its origins in the Second World War when there was a need to provide certain controls and certain messages because of the security situations during the war.He noted that a period of constitutional crisis followed; the British government continued to maintain control of information through the Government Information Service (GIS). The President said he does not believe that the state should maintain those controls any longer. He said, “I believe in free media and as Head of State, I need criticisms, I need to be told where the government is going wrong. I need an alert media community, one that will look at projects, how people are being treated, the dangers of diseases,Adrian Amos Jersey, environmental hazards and alert the government to the people’s concerns. I can’t do without criticisms. No government can do without criticisms.”The Head of State continued, “I don’t want someone to always be telling me ‘Oh yea, yea everything is fine, everything is going good.’ And I don’t want state media personnel to feel that their roles are to simply tell the government good things and not report what is being said by the other side.”Granger said that the Government consists of three branches; the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary and the state media must report on all three branches. He said that in the Legislative branch for example, there are the usual debates the state media must report on Government’s side as well as the arguments being put forward by the political opposition.“I have to hear the Opposition’s side to know what half the population is taking,Brandon Ingram Jersey, thinking and saying and so the state media must report on both sides. So in due course, the actual functions, the commercial functions I hope would disappear.”The President asserted that in the meantime,Michael Irvin Jersey, the state will continue to provide credible information to the entire population.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) says that with all the glowing reviews of the country’s economic performance by Finance Minister Ashni Singh, his analysis is based on sectors that are susceptible to external shocks and price uncertainty.Dr Tarron KhemrajThis is according to AFC’s economic advisor Dr Tarron Khemraj who told journalists at the party’s weekly press conference that essentially,Cheap MLB Gear, this growth is based on selling Guyana’s primary resources without any major added value taking place at home.He said that the present tepid growth rate could have been much better if the PPP government got the Skeldon Sugar Factory in proper working order, which in turn includes planting the adequate amount of canes.Furthermore, he said an average growth rate of just below four per cent is far below the minimum target of seven per cent of the AFC, which has outlined a plan to meet that growth target.“We have missed the sugar price boom that will not continue indefinitely. In addition,Wholesale Hockey Jerseys Online, we are benefitting from very high gold price but actual production of value added gold jewelry continues to lag price. We missed the great economic boom of the 1990s and also the early 2000s,” Dr. Khemraj emphatically said.He said that the PPP is boasting of the country’s housing development as a major growth factor in the economy.“While we support housing for the masses, we believe the Minister is mistaken to believe this sector can sustain long-term growth in the Guyanese economy. First, housing creates short-term jobs during the period when construction occurs. Second, there is no major industrial or service sector emerging that will produce the kind of income to pay off the housing loans. Third,Argentina World Cup T-Shirts, we believe the PPP is setting up the banking sector for our own subprime-type housing financial crisis. Fourth, most house building materials are imported,David Robinson Jersey, thus the housing programme is not contributing to the kind of industry linkages the AFC envisages.”The economic advisor said that the economy is yet to undergo significant structural change, especially with new emerging tradable sectors that can break new foreign markets. Housing, he said,Andre Burakovsky Jersey, is a non-tradable sector where a house is not something one can export.“The AFC’s vision for housing would be to link the construction of houses to locally made components that could eventually be exported – thus adding a tradable component to housing. This will be true production transformation. We cannot wait another nineteen years to see the realization of these obvious economic activities,Authentic MLB Jerseys,” he asserted.Noting that the AFC has articulated an alternative vision for Guyana, Dr Khemraj said that their economic policies will be financed by a portfolio of inflows ranging from diaspora investments, foreign direct investments, local investments, a state development bank and private capital markets. In addition the party will also seek multilateral concessional funding from the traditional sources. “We do not place all of Guyana’s financing in one basket as does the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). We do not see any of this in the PPP’s economic plan,Alex Anzalone Jersey, which is meant to keep the masses at subsistence level. Moreover, there can be no development if the masses remain at subsistence.”

Licenses to allow the continuance of a business operation in the city should not be issued unless there is ample evidence to indicate that clients have honoured their rates and taxes commitment. This notion was emphasised by Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Keith Burrowes,Bill Lee Jersey, who revealed that this state of affairs has been allowed to persist at the Georgetown municipality which has the responsibility for licensing the operations of businesses in the city.Citing a hypothetical example,Kyle Wiltjer Jersey, Burrowes said that City Hall is currently challenged by a situation whereby “it goes after one person for his taxes and we don’t know that he didn’t pay on his barbershop licence…My point is that if a man owes for rates and taxes, why is a license being issued to him? You need to know that he needs to pay up first…,” Burrowes asserted. He was at the time addressing a gathering of municipal officials at a forum to launch a database software.Debt recovery is another protracted challenge that has overwhelmed the municipality,Cheap Hockey Jerseys Official, Burrowes noted.According to him,Jeff Green Jersey, a major part of the city entity’s work revolves around the debt recovery unit. Additionally, Burrowes disclosed that based on information at his disposal the municipality currently has two junior staffers in this department.“I don’t know their experience in collecting debt. But as I said to the team the other day debt recovery is not just a phone call and demand notices.”At the moment,Braden Holtby Jersey, he said that the municipality’s debt recovery efforts are totally outside of the acceptable rate. “In a commercial bank two to three percent default is reasonable because they are able to make provision. In a development bank I think it is about 10 to 15 percent which is acceptable.“I don’t know what is your acceptable default rates but what I believe is that you need to have a cut off point that will alert councillors to a situation which is deteriorating…Right now we don’t have that.”It is for this reason, Burrowes highlighted that there is urgent need for the implementation of the database system which will help to monitor this process. He said that the implementation will support the council’s team in debt recovery. He revealed plans to have training programmes to deal with debt recovery for the entire senior management of the council. This is especially crucial,World Baseball Classic Jerseys Outlet, he said, as debt recovery is not merely narrowed to the Treasurer’s Department.“Right now we are in the news because we really are in a bad state…So we will run behind the debt now because we can’t pay the garbage contractors and we might not be able to pay salaries. Then we will go back to sleep once we are finished with that…”City Hall, Burrowes asserted has not been able to manage its clients effectively, adding that the efforts are not made to relate to garbage contractors for instance until there is no money to pay for services rendered.According to Burrowes,Argentina National Soccer Team Jerseys, even when finances are available City Hall should engage the contractors so that any looming problems could be discussed in good fate. “Those people have expenses…they have incurred cost; most of them would take overdraft and for those who don’t know the overdraft interest is high…So while they are waiting on you they have other expenses too. I think it is a bit unfair if we know that this situation is getting worse that we wait only when they pull their services to have discussions.”One of the issues that was highlighted during the most recent meeting Burrowes held with the municipal finances committee was that the municipality with its own facilities is moving 50 percent of the garbage.“But support will be forthcoming,” Burrowes added.Meanwhile, outside of the Debt Recovery Unit, Burrowes has helped to install an accounting software which will help to bolster the operation of the Treasury Department.According to Burrowes, the municipality cannot afford to operate the same way it has over the years. “Right now there is a General Ledger (GL) that is electronically generated but the entries are still passed incorrectly as last year. At the end of the day the GL will be incorrect and our investment would have gone down the drain.”According to Burrowes, there is a need for somebody to be in place to ensure that entries are posted correctly, adding that when the accounting software and the database system are fully functional the credibility of the municipal information will undoubtedly improve.

By Ralph Seeram“Ah glad fuh come and see yuh but I ain’t coming to GT while dem people marching,” my friend said on the other end of the phone. My friend had learnt that I was in Guyana. He was not alone in his fear of coming to the city. My regular taxi driver was in fear of coming to the city because of the “peaceful” protests by APNU.This was the case for the thousands of people who live in the outlying areas who normally travel to the city to do business. The “peaceful” protests have also had a negative impact on the business community who closed their doors on the slightest rumour, and with good reason,World Baseball Classic Jerseys, given the history of past PNC protests after elections. What is the pretext for these protests? APNU was calling for the original Statements of Poll from the various polling stations. Now let’s get rid of this “red herring” that APNU is using and get to the real reason for these protests.Every political party had a representative who signed the SOP and were given copies, so each parties knew exactly how many votes each received, before GECOM announced the official results. All the parties had tallied their votes. So why all the nonsense of wanting to examine the Statements of Poll? APNU claims that they could have been altered, and by inference, in favour of the PPP. Now this could be a real possibly. Only problem is David Granger is not coming out clearly to say that is what happened. Why?APNU could have easily found out if there were errors in GECOM tally of the votes and theirs. As far as I know APNU has not disputed GECOM figures, so why use the SoP as an excuse for protests? It was really a minor issue that could have been resolved by other legal avenues available to them. Instead they choose to drive fear and tension in the city leading to the police using rubber bullets against protesters in an illegal march.Even if there are errors I am sure they are minor and not enough to change the results of the elections. Trust me if there were major discrepancies, APNU would have made this known already.AFC also received the same copies. You don’t hear the party disputing GECOM figures. If there were any major discrepancies I am sure AFC would have made it known. There was absolutely no need for these protests especially after an election. Tensions are already high and the actions only serve to increase them.Sure, some argue that APNU has a right to protest, but this must be done the legal way. APNU and its followers have consistently carried out illegal marches in the city,World Cup Jerseys 2018, ignoring the police and the law, consistently ignoring police legal orders and instruction, thus leading to the shooting of rubber bullets at demonstrators.I believe that APNU by its actions was seeking a confrontation with the authorities, by encouraging its supporters to break the law. Some have accused the police of using excessive force, including Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee. One has to appreciate the police position in making a call to take necessary action in real time situation. Rohee is a politician so we can discard his opinion. The problem is if that crowd that was “up in the police face” got out control resulting in violence and destruction,Benson Mayowa Jersey, those very people would be criticizing the police for not taking firm action to prevent the situation. The police obviously were in a “catch 22” situation. Actions by PNC supporters in previous elections except 2006 bring back fears to people, especially the business community. Demonstrating in front of GECOM officials’ homes serves only one purpose–to intimidate. That has been the modus operandi of the PNC in previous years dating back to the sixties. Nothing has changed except the name, the stripes are still there. The statements by Rohee condemning the police action would only serve to undermine the confidence of the police force. If this Minister felt that the police actions were wrong, the thing to do was to have a private meeting with police, not to let them “hang and dry to the public”.Now what should the police do when faced with a worse situation? I’ll tell you what they will do, turn a blind eye and let chaos rule.I mentioned that the protests are a pretext for something else. When David Granger was nominated as Presidential candidate, it caused a rift in the PNC. One must recall Granger was not a “rank and file” member. There are two schools of thought,World Baseball Classic Jerseys 2017, about the demonstrations. One is Granger is trying to solidly his position with the rank and file members,Allen Iverson Jersey, others are of the view that Granger does not have control and others within the party are starting to assert their power. Some people are wondering if Granger is in charge or if James Bond and David Hinds are controlling the demonstrators. The true colours of the PNC are emerging. New name, same old tactics.Did anyone in the PNC youth arm think who employs some of supporters? Yes, the very people whose stores you are asking them to boycott. Business has already lost revenue by closing early, so I guess you don’t care if they are out of a job for Christmas.Judging from the few hundred supporters the PNC can muster for their march (I was there in person to see them) I think no one is going to pay any serious attention to your boycott call. The feeling I got from speaking to cross sections of the people in Georgetown, including PNC supporters,Cheap Baseball Jerseys Authentic, is they are fed up with the demonstrations and threats. Some have been trying to distance themselves from the boycott call. I think they realize it was doomed for failure. Who is going to boycott stores at Christmas?President Ramotar has named his Cabinet. I am wondering if the PPP heard what the voters wanted. Apparently not. They were tired of the corruption and voted so. But this has apparently not dawned on the President, ( who I personally think is capable of working with the opposition). He recycled the same people, retaining Robert Persaud, and Irfaan Ali among others. He removed the only competent Minister he had in Health Minister Ramsammy and moved him to Agriculture. The president has not made the bold move and initiative the voters wanted. Instead he retained some Ministers whose accumulation of wealth is highly questionable, to put it bluntly people view two of those Ministers as the biggest thieves.President Ramotar will have to do more to demonstrate to the Guyanese public that he intends to stamp out corruption. So far he is not off to a good start. So where Guyana goes from here, the first test comes with electing the Speaker of Parliament. The AFC and APNU are already jockeying for this position. This is only the start. They would have to agree on a number of issues going forward.President Ramotar has started engaging the opposition in dialogue to get consensus on common issues. It’s a good start,Kevin Love Jersey, but as I mentioned before the public is waiting to see when he will get of those who earned their wealth illegally.Ralph Seeram can be reached at email: [email protected]
