-As anti-suicide campaign reaches President’s CollegePresident’s College yesterday held its second annual career open day, with wife of Prime Minister,Wife of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Sita NagamootooMoses Nagamootoo, Mrs. Sita Nagamootoo, using the platform to speak about the warning signs of suicide and prevention strategies in the latest installment of the “Say yes to life, no to suicide” school campaign.Yesterday’s event also saw a spirited debating competition between students on how effective the Government’s current strategies of tackling suicide are. All of this was judged by a panel of teachers.Mrs. Nagamootoo, addressing the school before the start of the debate, encouraged the students, teachers and parents alike to keep a close watch on their peers for the warning signs that are oftentimes evident, such as changes in behaviour.She also spoke of how important it was for social workers to visit the homes of troubled youths and keep track of them. Mrs. Nagamootoo also noted that counsellors should also maintain a presence in schools.Mrs. Nagamootoo acknowledged the factors that might lead to suicide such as verbal,Manchester City Jersey 2018/19, sexual and emotional abuse. The first speaker from the proposing side quoted statistics which purported to show that Hindus account for 69 percent of Guyana’s suicide victims. She also argued that there have been interventions by the government.In response,Atletico De Madrid Tienda, the first speaker from the opposing side sought to argue that these initiatives are not good enough as suicide is shown to be irrevocably linked to poverty, based on prevailing research. In her fiery performance, she noted that during the economic recession of 2007-2008 the number of suicides surged. She also referenced suicide reported among rice farmers in dire economic straits.“These people don’t want to hear that we are here for you,” she said. “They want their problems to be fixed.”The opposing side was strong in arguing that current policies were not enough and that there should be more focus on alleviating economic distress. She said that PC students were taken to Parliament this week during the consideration of the budget estimates to observe the process and get a concept of debating. She noted that they were impressed, but that they had also noted the fierceness of the House.She noted that the decision to incorporate the debate on suicide was for the school to play its part in making a contribution to bringing awareness to suicide prevention, as suicide has become a scourge in Guyana.“For the Regional (local) Science Fair, we are doing a project on suicide,” the Principal also explained. “What we plan to do is use some of the students who debated today,Uniforme Del Real Madrid 2018, because they now have a wealth of information on suicide to form a team to do that presentation.”She noted that among the measures the school employs to help students to know how to reject suicidal predispositions is to hold interactive sessions with resident students on suicide prevention in the dorms.The Ministry of Education has been embarking on suicide awareness sessions in Georgetown under the theme “Choose life; say no to suicide”, in several city schools since last month.
