United Way seeking volunteers for Day of Caring

    <html>Volunteers are needed for the Day of Caring on Sept. 26.
    The United Way of Central Minnesota is helping about 30 organizations find volunteers for 62 projects throughout the area.
    There are 428 volunteer opportunities, and people have until Sept. 19 to sign up.
    ?The main goal is to educate the community,? said Jessica Johnson, United Way marketing and communications manager. ?We rely on our volunteers to get our work done. It?s really a savings for the community.?
    The volunteer opportunities are varied. Some of the events include a Kids Fighting Hunger food-packaging night and stenciling city storm drains for the city of St. Cloud.

    The United Way hosted the day between 1992 and 2009, but then the organization played around with different events. It has hosted Week of Action for the past two years. That spread out volunteer opportunities during a week.
    The United Way brought back the day of volunteering because of demand, according to Johnson.

    The Day of Caring kicks off with a breakfast, and volunteers will be given T-shirts.
    The opportunities introduce people to the area?s nonprofits. Companies have developed relationships with nonprofits and have continued to volunteer.
    ?It fosters year-round volunteerism,? Johnson said. ?Yes, it?s one day, but nonprofits need your help year-round.?</html>
